Reflection 2
A story that has impacted my life is the movie “Amish Grace”, which is based on a true story and it has made me understand why the Amish people are the way they are. This tragedy took place on October 2006, which later was turned in to a movie in 2010. This is about how a gunman killed five Amish children and injured five other. The media became rapidly interested in the story; they witness how the Amish community demonstrated their forgiveness and compassion to the shooter’s family. Before watching this movie, I could not understand why the Amish people dressed and lived differently from everyone else. I did not see the point of living such a simple life. Watching this movie made me understand why the Amish people are the way they are, and it is because they want to live a life without distractions from worshiping God. They believe that having technology and anything that could distract them from worshiping God is wrong. This made me see them in a different way and understand them better. In the movie, it showed how one of the moms of one of the girls that died had the hardest time forgiving the shooter’s wife, even though everyone around her would tell her that it was the right thing to do. She was told not to keep anger in her, that this would only hurt her more. The support that the Amish community gave the shooter’s wife was something we do not see often. They were there to help her get through her grief, and made her feel loved. This part helped me understand how forgiving people and showing friendship can lead to positive outcomes that would otherwise never be possible. Also if we carry negativity, it only makes everything worse. “Amish Grace” has taught that no matter how big or small our battles and struggles in life are, if we have a positive attitude we can find the hardest battles easier to handle.
